In my view, having a good home is one of the more important aspects of being at your best. In this blog post we will explore a few of the main elements that make up a good home, and we will look at the relationship between our home and our self.
So we're talking about Feng Shui here. Feng Shui is very powerful. Feng Shui has been called the 'chinese art of placement', but really it is so much more than just placement. Feng Shui literally translates as 'Wind and Water'. So this refers to the elements, or the elemental energy of a place, meaning the energies of air, earth, fire, wood, metal.
This connects very nicely in with the other great thing that comes from China: Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM. TCM connects each of these 5 elements to an organ in the body and also to an emotion as well. Dis-ease is viewed as an expression of imbalance and stagnation. The idea is to create balance and flow. As an example, being too fiery or aggressive or overheating, would be an imbalance. So would be being too cool or spacey - too much air. Balance is the goal.
So we have these elemental expressions. So when we talk about your home environment, we're talking about a number of things. We're talking about the elemental balance of your home. We're talking about the elemental balance of the area you live in (do you live in the mountains or near the ocean? In sunny California or rainy Vancouver?)
And further we're talking about the shape and colors of the rooms we live and work in. And yes, even the placement of the furniture can enhance or disrupt the flow and collection of chi or life energy in a home. Because our home can a be big chi collector! Our home can be a healing space. It can be a place that when you or others arrive there, the chi or life energy collected in the space knocks you out. You calm. you relax.
One life coaching school I know of teaches this: "First you coach your client, then you coach their environment. If you're not coaching the environment, you're only doing half the job." They teach their coaches to help their clients design supportive environments, because they know that "the environment always wins". Our environments are very powerful.
So here's an exercise to do, very simple, even enjoyable: pause after you read this and think of a place, preferably a house or restaurant or inner space where you love to be. A place where you feel good. And imagine yourself in that place. Then ask yourself, 'What is it about this place that feels so good to me?'
Notice what that makes great spaces feel great. By doing this, you can learn a lot. You might notice that it's the high ceilings - it's helps you uplift, expand. Or you might notice it is the warm wood floors - you ground out. But for sure it will be about the colors, and about the shape of the space.
These days I am very sensitive to the energy around me. And I have learned that it is absolutely essential for me, after I move in to a new space, to get to work making it balanced and healthy for me. I pay special attention to colors. I *need* my living spaces to be balanced. In other words, not too spacey, and not too dark and heavy either. A balance. Further, I have come to see this is how it is in nature. Nature generally has a certain balance: warmer colors down low (like brown earth) and lighter colors up high like green foliage and blue skies. In many ways, nature is a picture of balance.
Now I'd like to leave you with a few pointers for designing a space:
1. Balance. Look at the elemental balance of your space, and your own elemental balance. For ex: are you a very airy person? Then you might want more earth (brown, red, green...) in your space. If you are a more fiery person, you might want more watery or cooling colors, like greens or blues.
2. Shapes. Notice the shapes of the rooms you live in. Are they tall and narrow? Or wide and low? Are they too small? Too big? Its a lot like clothes. The right shape will feel best, will bring out your best. You can change the 'shape' of the room to some extent with furniture, fabric, how the lines go.
3. Activities. Ask yourself what are the main activities you do in each room. Are the colors, lighting, etc, in that room supporting that activity? As always, when making a change, go with your gut. Go with what feels right. Try your spontaneous impulses and see what happens. You can always change it back.
As a human being we have 3 main energy bodies. We have a physical, an emotional and a mental energy body. These are all different layers of energy fields that make up you. The emotional body especially resonates with the frequencies of sound and color. So when we enter a space, it is immediately having an effect on you - either vitalizing or devitalizing. It is either balancing or unbalancing us. And the effect is more pronounced the more time we spend there. How much time do you spend, for ex, in your kitchen? Or your bedroom?
