Ten years ago I had the privilege of sitting with an enlightened meditation master from Tibet, Karma Sherpa Rinpoche.
Karma Sherpa blew my mind in those weeks in a number of ways.
And one of those times went like this...
It was a quiet evening, after meditation and Dharma activities. I was relaxing with a friend, watching Star Trek on TV. And Karma Sherpa was there sitting very upright, as usual…like a lion…noble, strong, in his maroon and plum.
Captain Picard had just fallen for a shape-shifting alien who takes on whatever form is most attractive to her mate.
Clearly Karma Sherpa could feel the male hormones in the room going way up, so he spoke: “Life…not about this.”
I was like ‘What?’. I didn’t understand him at all. How could like not be about this? Relationship and attraction are natural things.
Fast forward 12 years, several relationships and a lot of meditation practice.
Now I get it.
We lose perspective of what truly matters.
We lose ourselves in relationship - in even thinking about relationship.
We are often on a search for happiness in some kind of ideal partnership. And while relationship does matter…I believe there's also a lot of addiction that goes on. We get addicted to love, to sex, maybe even to attention and approval.
The big aha that I have had since that meeting with Karma Sherpa Rinpoche is this: we are here to evolve from a desiring relationship to things…to a serving relationship to things.
Which includes the people in our life.
It’s a 180 degree turn.
From desiring to serving.
