Today more and more people are going vegan. More and more people are also going paleo.
The question becomes, "Should you go vegan?". I was vegan myself a decade ago and have been studying nutrition ever since, reading widely, experimenting with my own diet, and I have some important realizations to share.
The main message I have here is this: instead of going vegan, please consider just eating less meat, and buying organic or pastured meat instead of conventional.
But why not just go vegan? Well, going vegan seems to work really well for some, but not at all well for others. So for that reason, most of the educators I read don't recommend a vegan diet. They recommend instead a plant based diet, and eating organic meat if you do eat meat. They recommend avoiding conventional meat completely. Plus their are other things we can do for protein, like protein shakes, fish, eggs, lentils or quinoa.
So instead of quitting all animal foods, quit eating low quality animal food. Instead of buying conventional chicken or beef, which was raised in horrible conditions, on a horrible diet - consider buying organic chicken or beef: which usually means the animals had 1) access to sun and green space 2) wasn't fed an unnatural diet of GMO corn and soy, and 3) wasn't pumped with antibiotics (which then gets passed on to you), or growth hormones (which also gets passed on to you).
This is my strategy, btw. I'm not vegan. I do a ton of veggies, plus small amounts of organic or pastured animal foods.
Sometimes people will say this costs more. And it does. But to me, its not negotiable. I wont support the horrible ways that conventional animals are raised.
If you really want to decrease your food bill (dont we all?) instead of eating lower quality meat, consider reducing your intake of processed food. Processed foods, like potato chips for example, are not only very expensive, but they are very hard on the body.
My main reason for buying pastured and not conventional meat is the animal's welfare.
CAFO's ("Conventional Animal Feed Operations"), are horrific places. Without access to sun or fresh air, the animals go insane, and then that energy of insanity is passed on to you, the one who eats them.
Plus they are fed unnatural diets. For ex, cows in CAFO's are often fed GMO corn and soy. A very unnatueal diet for an animal that is meant to eat grass. And the truth is, you arent what you eat. You are what you eat, ate. So if your dinner ate GMO corn and soy, yikes - what GMO foods do to us is not good at all.
And chickens in CAFOs are given growth hormones that make them literally grow at twice their normal rate...and these hormones then get passed on to you. Plus, conventional chicken, due to their unnatural diet and lack of movement, have up to 4 times the fat of an organically raised bird, and it's omega 6 fat, which is inflammatory and basically makes you feel like crap. Eat crap, feel like crap.
Avoid pride, which is ego food. If you do go vegan, don't say, "I'm vegan", because then it becomes a seperative thing, which your ego uses to make you feel holier than others. Instead just say, "I like vegetables". Going vegan doesn't make you holier than others.
This also keeps you out of categories. If you really feel like eating some meat, you can, and without guilt of thinking that you're a sinner somehow... you're not a sinner if you eat meat.
Now lets look briefly at the deeper truth around people and animals:
The deeper truth is that humans didn't invent recycling. It was here long before us. What I mean is: form consumes form. When you die, your body will be food for worms. And it's the same with animals. By not eating them, you don't keep them from dying, and it turns out, you don't even keep them from suffering: animals in the wild often suffer greatly, often dying from hunger, disease, and injuries. Even if we all stopped eating animals today, they would all still die, and most of them would suffer.
But all of that is prevented on an organic farm. Instead they are protected, allowed to live and play, and then die a quick, humane death. And if you believe, as I do, in reincarnation, then you also know that no living being can really die. We all immediately reincarnate, to continue our evolution forward over lifetimes - in infinite, Divine life. Nature is Creation. God created predators and prey, to play and live out this infinite dance of life where form consumes form. There is nothing wrong in it, and if we think their is then we are putting ourselves above the creative Mind that designed our bodies, the Earth, our whole world, that all fits together in one intricate Play. A tiger is not somehow less than us because it has instincts to kill and eat a gazelle - form consumes form, and incarnation continues. Its actually very beautiful when viewed this way. Sentient beings are delicate, mortal, yet also immortal and eternal.
So in considering all these views, the real evil might not be eating meat. The real evil might be stepping aside from the design of life: not listening to our bodies, and torturing animals in CAFOs. The real enemy might be the suffering we create when we go against the natural order of things.
